Chapter Eight

“All this time,” Jen shouted, as she squeezed my arm tighter. “Acting like butter wouldn’t melt, but you knew.” She had a wild look in her eyes.

“Ouch, Jen. Let go of my arm! What’s wrong with you?” I tried to pull away from her grip but she grabbed my other arm too as I moved out of my chair.

“Jen, let go.”

“I told you private things and you used that against me,” she hollered, as she shook me.

“What are you talking about?” I replied, as I freed myself from her grip. She swiftly lunged forward towards me but luckily I managed to grab her wrists. We struggled with each other as she tried to get closer to me.

“Drop the act, Lexi. I know you’re screwing Dane.” Her revelation stunned me and I lost my grip on one of her wrists. She grabbed the front of my top and twisted her hand into a fist, pulling me right up to her face. I felt like the room was spinning. My brain just about registered Maggie and Craig, as they moved behind Jen and restrained her.

“Stop this, Jen,” Maggie told her as she held her back.

“I saw you together. I told you I was trying to get back with him and you screwed me over,” Jen shouted. Right then, I felt as though the floor had fallen away beneath me and my stomach was turning too.

“Dane,” I said in almost a whisper as I turned back to look at him. He was a statue.

“You listened to me talk about him and you were seeing him behind my back all this time?” she continued to rant.

“Dane,” I said again.

“I can explain,” he said to me.

“I saw the two of you last night. I went around to your dad’s house,” she shouted past me at Dane. “I had a birthday present for you but there you were, sucking face with her.”

“I didn’t know,” I said to her through my confused haze. I searched my memories trying to think back to what she had told me, trying to find something that made sense. “You never said, I didn’t know.”

“Of course you knew. Everyone knew. Are you trying to tell me you’re the only one in this entire office who didn’t know Dane and I were together?” I looked over at Craig and then at Rhonda, and it was written all over their faces that they knew. That was why Rhonda had asked if I was alright. It was all clicking into place. I realised then that most of the other members of staff had arrived and were watching the spectacle. I was mortified.

“Yes, Jen! That’s exactly what I’m telling you,” I said in a shaky voice. I could feel myself welling up but I wasn’t going to cry.

“Maggie, get her out of here,” Dane said, staring furiously at Jen as he finally moved and came to stand beside me.

“That’s right, just push me aside. Like rubbish,” Jen shouted.

“Jen, I’ll talk to you once you’ve calmed down,” Dane said in a severe tone.
